Gas station gets covered in fabric Our July issue features a story about an art project that wrapped up an old gas station in Syracuse, N.Y., with a crazy quilt of fiber panels. To learn more about the project – and see some colorful photos of the giant artwork – swing by www.InternationalFiberCollaborative.com. Track progress of man’s attempt to live gasoline-free Gas prices may have you wishing you could avoid gas stations altogether. Brian LaFave, of Sheboygan, Wis., is vowing to do just that: The 31-year-old has dug out his bike and is riding to work each day, in an attempt to avoid buying gas until Sept. 22. You can see how well he follows his goal by visiting his Web page, http://TheGasolineBoycott.org. Learn more about nation’s last living WWI veteran Following a reader’s suggestion, we included a story on Frank Buckles, 107, the nation’s last living WWI veteran, in our July issue. Buckles was just 16 years old when he first attempted to enlist at the Kansas State Fair in Wichita in 1917 – when school was out for the summer. That’s just one of the many interesting details you can find at the Library of Congress Web page about Buckles. It includes photos, scanned images of official documents, and the transcript of an interview with the veteran. It’s located at: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/diglib/vhp-stories/loc.natlib.afc2001001.01070. The page is part of the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project (www.loc.gov/vets), which brings together veterans’ stories from World War I through the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Web page of the project dedicated to World War I is www.loc.gov/vets/stories/ex-war-wwi.html. As our story about Buckles noted, he was recently back in the Midwest for a visit to the National World War I Museum. If you’re curious about the museum’s exhibits and events, visit www.LibertyMemorialMuseum.org. Visit colorful town online Rabbit Hash, Ky., elected a dog as its mayor not once, but twice – first in 1998 and again in 2004. That may not be enough to convince you to visit the town in real life, but it may be enough to make you take a trip through the online home of this colorful community, located at www.RabbitHashUSA.com. After our story on Rabbit Hash went to press, we were saddened to see an update to the site announcing that Mayor Junior, a black lab, had passed away. Will Vice Mayor Rudy (a Brittany spaniel) be moving into the mayor’s office? Or will a past run in with animal control officers spoil his chances? We, at least, will be revisiting the Web site for more information. Shingles shot now recommended for those 60 plus You may have read in the July issue that the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recently recommended the shingles vaccine be given to all people 60 years old or older. To learn more about the painful skin rash and the vaccination, visit www.CDC.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/shingles. |
