Kansas weather exhibit

“If you don’t like the weather here, just wait a few minutes, and it will be completely different.”

That’s a sentiment familiar to the ear of any Kansan. It may be a bit of an old saw in any number of states, but we can’t help but feel it’s especially apt ’round these parts. Of course, not all of those changes in weather are welcome. Forces of nature, an exhibit that opened recently at the Kansas History Center in Topeka, takes a look at some of the more extreme weather we have to deal with here, from twisters to fires to floods. To learn more, visit www.KSHS.org/exhibits/current/newexhibits.htm.

Crafters retreats

Also of interest to our Kansas readers – or to folks looking for an excuse to visit here – was our article in this issue on crafters’ retreats. These bed and breakfasts cater to lovers of crafts like quilting, scrapbooking and cardmaking. You can find out more by visiting the Web sites of the attractions mentioned in article: Kansas Keepsakes Retreat, www.KansasKeepsakes.com; Maple Memories, www.MapleMemories.com; and Yoder Haus, www.YoderHaus.com.

Pancakes in a can

If you’re not ready to splurge on a stay at a bed and breakfast, you could instead opt for a less-extravagant treat: a hassle-free breakfast, courtesy of the Batter Blaster. The product, designed to make pancakes ready at the press of a nozzle, isn’t available everywhere, however, so you’ll want to check the product’s Web site, www.BatterBlaster.com, to see if it’s available in your area. We enjoyed visiting the site just to see the video showing how exactly the product’s pancakes-in-a-can idea works in practice.

If the video won’t play for you, you may want to install the free Flash Player program and see if that corrects the problem. You can download the player at www.Adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash. (You may find that the Flash Player improves other sites you visit as well.)

Declawing alternatives

Cat owners looking for alternatives to declawing may want to give a few of these products a try:
SSSCAT, www.SssCat.com/english, combines a spray can with a motion detector, so you can deter your feline from getting near furniture legs even when you’re not around.

Sticky Paws, www.StickyPaws.com, tackles the problem with sticky tape. It can be placed wherever you don’t want your cat to place its mitts.
Soft Paws, www.SoftPaws.com, gets at the very root of the problem, with nail caps that can be applied directly to claws to render them harmless.

Keeping track of the planets

Ever found yourself at a loss to remember an important new telephone number – yet able to recall the words to a song that you don’t even like? Then you know the power lyrics have to get into our heads and stay there. If you know any youngsters who need to learn the names of the planets, consider sending them to http://Kids.NationalGeographic.com/Stories/SpaceScience/Planet-song. There, they will be able to play a song that in no time should have them reciting “My Very Exciting Magic Carpet Just Sailed Under Nine Palace Elephants.”

Why should they remember that? The letters that begin the words in the phrase will help them remember the planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Eris.
