Sweet potato recipe contest As we reported in the April issue, your favorite sweet potato recipes could earn you some money. Go to www.GetFreshWithSweetPotatoes.com and click on the potato at the left to find out information on entering the Get Fresh with North Carolina Sweet Potatoes Recipe Contest. Create some cupcakes Speaking of recipes, you may recall a review of two cupcake books in the April issue. As we noted in the magazine, the Web site promoting the book Hello, Cupcake! offers some instructions for crafting a few cupcakes with a fanciful flourish – including the dog cupcakes featured on the book’s cover. You can find the “Hello Cupcake of the Month” at www.HelloCupcakeBook.com/Hello_Cupcake_of_the_Month.html. If you enjoy the instructions there, and you want to see more, click on “More Cupcake Designs” to see past cupcake recipes (including those canines on the book’s cover). The other book mentioned in the magazine was Little Cakes from the Whimsical Bakehouse. We visited the Web site for the whole Whimsical Bakehouse book series, www.WhimsicalBakehouse.com, and promptly got distracted looking at fun recipes for other sweet treats. However, we refocused and located some instructions for creating Ladybug Cupcakes. Go to www.WhimsicalBakehouse.com/decorate/decorate.html, and click on the video link on the right side of the page. If you prefer written instructions, you can find them at www.WhimsicalBakehouse.com/decorate/decorate_detail_2.html. Free quilting pattern Another book that attracted our attention in the April issue was Meg Cox’s The Quilter’s Catalog. The author’s Web site is featuring a free, printable quilt pattern, “Need a Gift Next Week Tied Quilt.” Find the pattern by scrolling through this page on Cox’s Web site: www.MegCox.com/quilters_catalog.htm. You can further explore the site to read more about the book, find information on a quilting contest that’s tied-in with the publication, and sign up for a Quilting is Hot! newsletter. You can also purchase the book at our online bookstore at Osteoporosis tool You may have read in CAPPER’S that men as well as women should be concerned about osteoporosis. If you’re interested to see how different factors affect your chances of developing the disease, visit www.Shef.ac.uk/FRAX. If you visit the site, it may first ask if you want to install a Japanese language pack. Simply pick “Cancel.” Then, click on “Calculation Tool” at the top of the page and scroll down to see the tool that corresponds to your race and nationality. Once the tool is up, you can use the weight and height conversion tool along the left side of the page as you answer the questions. You can also read about the terms in the tool by scrolling down the page. If question 12 appears blank on your screen, you may want to install the free Flash Player program and see if that corrects the problem. You can download the player at Wheels for dogs An article in CAPPER’S told how a dachshund that lost the use of its back legs was still able to get around, thanks to a custom-made wheelchair. The makers of that device are online at www.Doggon.com. Other manufacturers of mobility carts for pets include Eddie’s Wheels for Pets, at www.EddiesWheels.com, and K-9 Carts, at www.K9Carts.com. If your dog needs wheels, she may also need a ramp. PetSTEP International, at www.PetStep.com, makes these. National Geographic travel Are you a high school student who loves armchair traveling courtesy of National Geographic magazine? Or do you know of a teenager who does? If so, you may want to visit www.NGStudentExpeditions.com. It provides information on a new program National Geographic is offering to bring students to some of the far-flung and picturesque locales founds within its pages. Take the procrastination test You may have read some worrying information in CAPPER’S about how procrastination is a growing problem. To see if you’re a bad procrastinator, you can find a procrastination assessment tool at www.Procrastinus.com. If you don’t do well, you may want to make your next stop the site of the Procrastination Research Group at Carleton University in Ottawa’s Web site, http://http-server.carleton.ca/~tpychyl. There, you can find more information, and read an excerpt from a self-help book for procrastinators. Some quick tips on overcoming procrastination can be found at this site from the State University of New York at Buffalo: |
