Flowers
Spring flowers bring bright colors
To the world’s lush emerald green.
They dot the world with brilliance
And create an exquisite scene.
Summer flowers grow in gardens,
Vibrant in their rainbow array.
They nod their heads in the breeze
And seem to be talking this way.
In autumn, rust and gold mums grow,
Rivaling the radiant leaves of fall.
Trees with their colorful leaf dresses
Look like they’re going to a ball.
Flowers, with their velvety petals,
Bring beauty wherever they grow.
When the world is filled with flowers,
It’s part of nature’s splendiferous show.

July Fourth Memories
Remember the family reunions?
An event we shared every year,
When aunts and uncles and cousins galore
Gathered together from far and near.
The tables were loaded with goodies –
Fried chicken and wieners and rolls,
Potato salad, beans and new garden peas,
And salads in giant-sized bowls.
There was plenty of ice-cold lemonade,
More cakes than we ever could eat,
Then gallons of homemade ice cream –
A special summertime treat.
Then the men began to play horseshoes,
While some young folks paired off and walked.
The babies took naps on their blankets,
And the old folks just sat there and talked.
The women and girls did the dishes;
Boys chose up sides for games of baseball;
The small fries enjoyed the slide and teeter-totter –
Seems there was something for all.
Soon time was called to gather round
For singing some old, favorite hymns,
Whether German or English, made no difference –
Oh, how those voices did ring.
The day always passed too quickly,
Sadly we had to say goodbye.
We had good times to remember
Until the next Fourth of July.

Summer in the Country
Where the silent, unseen breeze
Gently tousles leafy trees,
And puffy cotton balls
drift high
In deeper blue than
alien sky;
Where bark of dog and sound of boys
Are not other names
for noise,
And day dissolves into
a night
Of sprinkled stars nowhere so bright.

The Web of Life
Life is like a spider’s web.
Sometimes there is weaving,
Sometimes there is leaving.
There is a lot of beauty,
There is a lot of fragility.
There’s a lot of hard work,
There’s a lot of ability.
– Tom R. Kovach
Night and Day
When nighttime comes and the clouds are away,
The luminous stars all come out to play.
They gleam and they glitter
And all come together
To form the great Milky Way.
Then they suddenly fade
When the first glimpse is made
Of the sun as it brings in the day.

Finally …
I really love the Interstate –
I’ve driven sea to sea –
And I salute the highway crews
That build these roads for me.
So keep on pouring that cement –
Your labors never shirk –
But most of all I love your sign
“End Road Work”!
