The Measure of a Woman

The measure of a woman
Is more than just her size,
Or decisions she has made
Which the world has judged
as wise.

It’s more than hours of
service
To family, church and
friends;
Her garden filled with roses,
Her patience without end.

The measure of a woman
Is calculated best
By counting all the grateful
hearts
Her busy life has blessed.

May Day

Lilies of the valley, those
silent white bells,
hang on straight stems.
Violets hide beneath the pines,
perky purple petals veined with white
fashioning a five-pointed star,
leaves like suspended hearts
verdant with anticipation.

We pick them, stuff them
into paper baskets cut and pasted
by our still-awkward hands,
drop them on porches.
Our petite hands pound
on doors. We run away
fast as we can,
giggles trailing behind.

Maytime

With warming sun and
gentle rain
She beckons silently,
Inviting us into her world
Of newfound greenery.

With zest renewed, she guides
us through
Her gardens all aglow,
Where butterflies and
buzzing bees
Flit lightly to and fro.

With pride she wears her
colors bold
On daffodils and rose,
And by the greens of grass
and trees,
True beauty she bestows.

Her radiance eases restless
hearts so
They may reach their crest.
And I’m convinced God chose this month
For showing off His best.

Gift in Summer

As we meet
In the narrow path,
Surrounded by high wall
Of maples,
Your immediate offering,
A young daughter’s gift
For the seasonal,
Includes tiny buttercups,
Three red daisies,
Queen Anne’s Lace,
Given in celebration,
Within your small,
Extended arms.

Yesterday’s Socks

Yesterday’s socks.
They are passé.
There is no mystery left in them.
I already know where they
walked yesterday.
But, today’s socks,
they’re an entirely different thing.
I pick them up and put them on,
fresh, untraveled, full of anticipation
of where they can take me today.
