After the Storm

Lukewarm sunlight
Filters through the
Ravaged trees
And tries to warm
The shivering earth.

Tentatively, a blue jay
Tiptoes across the
Frozen grass
Then flies away
Into the waiting arms
Of spring.

Remember This?

The wet stretch
of earthworm pulled
from the dirt

the whiff of alfalfa
fresh mown and curing
in the Kansas sun

the tang of fresh cherry pie
hot and tart under
scooped vanilla
ice cream

the whistle of a Missouri-Pacific
train echoing through the Blue River Valley
as the caboose clanks across the trestled bridge

a rainbow
after an evening
thunderstorm

the joy
of a gold
star.

The Little Farmer

Gazing in his little hands,
I see the tiny seeds
As he looks up with eyes of pride,
he knows they’ll grow like weeds.

Grandpa gave them to him,
and put their future in his care
To plant a little garden, tilled and lying bare.

A garden waiting for some little seeds,
and a little work and toil
From muddy little fingers that have
come to bless its soil.

Armed with enthusiasm,
watering can and little hoe
Lots of focused ambition,
soil-stained denim and eyes aglow.

Proud to cultivate his little plot of land
Hoping for a harvest,
brought forth by his own hand.

Welcome Interruption

Busy day – no second free:

Calls to make,
Bread to bake,
House to dust,
Scrub – a must!

Suddenly, what’s that
I see?

Cardinal perches
In the birches.
His visits rare,
I stop and stare.

Forget the domesticity!
