Life’s Gems

Rocks of countless worth, life’s gems are not
But priceless times
Spent with family and friends.

A baby’s first cry,
Devoted lovers,
Birthdays, graduations, vacations.

Stones can be crushed, diamonds lost
But memories polished by passing years
Become priceless gems.

Hiring Good Help

Mother Nature must have
a devoted master chef
in her kitchen. Who else
is willing to work
all night long for our
delight, knowing how to
ice every fencepost,
each tree branch and twig
with perfect snow?

The Laughter of Time

Time has a sense of humor
That often shows itself
While waiting for a pot to boil,
Time takes a nap on the shelf.
Yet should a task be pressing,
And we beg “Oh, please, stand still,”
Time laughs at us, winds up its arms,
And spins like a crazed windmill.

The autumn meadow
alive with white butterflies
but, no, they’re snowflakes.

Homemade Biscuits

From first snowfall
of flour inside a bowl
through final push and
turn of kneading to
that telling point when
the rolled out dough,
cut into fragrant rounds,

signals each tiny puff of
rising readiness, I join
centuries of bakers
before and after me
who have created or will
in future shape small gifts
to bring warm comfort.

A Hug in Disguise

What does a senior citizen have to give
When the kids have all left the house?
And added to that is emptiness
Because heaven has taken our spouse.

I think I’ve found the answer,
And it came as a pleasant surprise.
Just lately I have figured this out –
That a smile is a hug in disguise!

Each day, everywhere I go,
I smile at all the people I see.
Nine times out of ten, what I notice most
Is a smile coming right back at me.

A smile just seems to have a way
Of putting a twinkle back into my eyes.
Your smile makes me happy and warm inside
Because a smile is a hug in disguise.
