Poetry
On My Birthday

It doesn’t bother me to mark
Another year from birth;
What I’ve failed to gain in wisdom,
I’ve surely gained in girth.

– Nancy Gold
Two-Step

Spinning, whirling,
toes barely touching
the floor;
Fingertips
in his gentle hands,
waist encircled
by his strong arms.

He lifts me,
twirls;

I point my toes,
stretch out my arm.

I’m charming,
beautiful,
loved.

The whole world is magic.

Spin me again,
Grandpa.

– Wilda Morris
Kitchen Keepsake

Yes, it’s shabby, stained
brown, grease-flecked
from years of use.
Sagging on the counter,
its fragile pages fall open
by themselves to recipes
three generations now have
savored – like gingerbread,
buttermilk biscuits, or
carrot-pineapple salad.
Time-honored wedding gifts,
this cookbook still produces
feasts for family, for
gathered groups eager
to finish whatever
my old friend starts.

Lois Muehl
Autumn Spectacular

Whispering leaves
bring peaceful music
under a colorful palette,
and my soul is soothed
in the symphony of autumn.

– Guy Belleranti
Moment of Disclosure

Moment of DisclosureDisregarding her lowly position,
a ragged, old oak flaunted
scarlet skirts in my face,
saying, “You have ignored me
too long.
Pay attention to me now.
My time has come.”
As, indeed, it had.
For no lovelier scene is there
than this – an old oak tree
showing its true colors
on a cold, grey day in October.

– Alice T. Weger
Our Backyard

Golden and russet leaves
carpeted the spacious yard.
Children romped and tromped,
mashing and mixing,
crushing the crispy leaves
to a fine layer.

No need to rake,
sack or mulch –

Soon snowmen
will appear
and the white layer
across the yard
will again
be tromped and stomped
by children
playing in
our backyard.

– Ethel Williams
