Almanac planting dates for the month of February are:

Feb. 1: Plant carrots, turnips, onions, beets, Irish potatoes and other root crops in the South. Lettuce, cabbage, collards and other leafy vegetables will do well. Start seedbeds.

Feb. 2-3: Neither plant nor sow on these barren days.

Feb. 4-5: Any root crops that can be planted now will do well.

Feb. 6-7: Barren days; clear, plow, fertilize and kill plant pests.

Feb. 8-9: Plant peppers, sweet corn, tomatoes and other aboveground crops in southern Florida, California and Texas. Extra good for cucumbers, peas, cantaloupes and other vine crops. Set strawberry plants.

Feb. 10-11: Seeds planted now will grow poorly and yield little.

Feb. 12-13: Fine days for planting beans, peppers, cucumbers, melons and other aboveground crops where climate is suitable.

Feb. 14-16: Any seed planted now will tend to rot.

Feb. 17-18: Fine days for planting beans, tomatoes, corn, cotton, cucumbers, peppers, melons and other above-ground crops where climate allows. Plant seedbeds and flower gardens.

Feb. 19-23: Clear ground and turn sod. Kill plant pests.

Feb. 24-26: Favorable days for planting root crops; fine for sowing grain, hay and forage crops. Plant flowers.
